Warrnambool City Council makes use of artificial intelligence (AI) to help deliver some tasks and services more efficiently and effectively.
For example, we have a people counter at the Warrnambool Stadium that uses AI to determine whether attendees are adults, children, male or female.
This people counter does not store any images and the demographic data it provides is used to inform stadium planning and programs.
Council also uses AI to collate information and make an initial assessment of parking fine appeals. AI is used only as an assistant and the final decision on an appeal is made by a Council staff member.
When writing documents, staff may use AI to help with grammar, spelling, content and information analysis.
Increasingly, external software providers on which Council depends embed AI tools in their products. These tools exist to help analyse data and the performance of the software. For example, Council uses survey software, Survey Monkey, that offers an AI tool which can help design surveys and analyse survey responses. Reputable software providers will have information on their websites that explain how they use AI.
In a rapidly changing online environment Council acknowledges that people may have concerns about the use of AI.
