Construction work on Stage One of the Brierly Recreation Reserve Eastern Oval Redevelopment has begun.

In October 2022 the Victorian Government, through its Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, committed $1 million for the Stage One redevelopment.

Stage One focuses on the Eastern Oval area and includes the upgrade of playing surfaces, installation of two full-sized soccer pitches with improved drainage, sub-surface irrigation, a new synthetic cricket pitch, LED lighting (200 lux), fencing and the demolition of an old pavilion.

Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora said that as a former mayor, she was part of the initial community consultation about the future use of the Brierly Recreation Reserve, and that she was pleased to see that vision beginning to be realised.

“There’s been a large number of community representatives from the neighbourhoods around here that have had a say on some of the ideas and aspirations for this site,” she said.

“It’s amazing to be here 10 years later and now we’ve got a great partnership between the Warrnambool City Council and the Allan Labor Government, and the most important party to the partnership is the community.”

Warrnambool Mayor Ben Blain thanked the Victorian Government for its $1 million contribution, a figure which Council has matched with its own funding.

“It’s going to be a really exciting project and hopefully the start of a new community hub and being able to better utilise this precinct,” he said.

“North Warranmbool is one of the biggest growth corridors we are seeing in Warrnambool. When you look at the East of Aberline precinct, once that comes online, this facility will have more and more demand placed on it.

“We look forward to continuing the work on the Brierly Master Plan.”

In November 2023, Council awarded the tender for field of play construction to Duggan Civil.

Stage One is expected to be completed by the end of June 2024.
