Construction on Warrnambool’s first pump track has begun.

The track will be located near the former YMCA site on Queens Road.

A pump track is a circuit with hills, berms and jumps. It’s designed to be used by bikes, skateboards and scooters, with riders generating momentum using body movements rather than pedalling or pushing.

The project has been funded through a $150,000 grant from the Australian Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

The pump track was identified in the South of Merri Open Space Precinct Plan, with Mayor Ben Blain saying he was excited to see work continuing on bringing the plan to life.

“Pump tracks are becoming more and more popular across Australia, and it’s really positive to be able to bring one to Warrnambool,” Cr Blain said.

“It’s something that older kids will have a lot of fun with, but really, looking at other locations, they’re popular with younger kids, and even adults too.

“This is near the former site of the BMX track, so it’s nice to be able to bring that aspect back to the area.

“The track will be located in a section of the northern car park area, so there will still be plenty of parking, and also room to expand the track in the future as funding allows.

“Looking ahead, the South of Merri Plan identifies a park and a fenced off-lead dog park, so this is really the first step in creating a new hub for recreation in this part of Warrnambool and making the most of the former YMCA site.

“Just this month Council adopted the North Merri Open Space Landscape Master Plan, and I’m looking forward to continuing to enhance this important corridor in the years ahead.”

The new pump track is expected to be open for the summer holiday period.
