Warrnambool and the South West have been rated Victoria’s most liveable place according to a new analysis.
The rating by insurer iSelect put Warrnambool on top based on factors including low unemployment, sense of belonging (measured by the share of residents who have lived in the same address for more than five years), housing affordability, social connectedness and safety.
The analysis noted that Warrnambool and the South West also had high volunteering rates which reflected strong community engagement.
“It’s great to see Warrnambool and the region feature prominently on a liveability index,” Deputy Mayor Cr Matt Walsh said.
“Residents would already know how great the city and region are and this analysis gives a little objectivity to the notion of what makes a place liveable.
“Warrnambool’s liveability no doubt makes it a great choice for people seeking a seachange and for employers seeking to attract workers.
“We’re also comfortably in the top 10 most liveable places in Australia, coming in at number six.”
The higher rankings were occupied by various regions in Sydney, the Adelaide Central and Hills region and inner Perth.
The high liveability ranking follows Warrnambool being recognised as Victoria’s Top Tourism Town in the 2025 Victorian Tourism Industry Council.
“It’s a thrill to see Warrnambool acknowledged as both a great place to live and a super place to visit,” Cr Walsh said.
The index assessed liveability on 10 factors including belonging, employment, housing affordability, health, mental health, health care access, work-life balance, green and blue space, social connectedness and safety.
