Council is planning to upgrade the oval at Friendly Societies Park.
Home of South Warrnambool Football Netball Club and known fondly as “Friendlies”, the proposed upgrade will include widening the oval to meet AFL standards.
“While we’re carrying out work on the dimensions of the oval, we’re aiming to use that opportunity to do other improvements,” Mayor Cr Ben Blain said.
“This will include sub-surface drainage work and an automated irrigation system.
“Importantly, we also plan to remove the old bitumen velodrome track which surrounds the oval and is no longer used.
“There is an external funding opportunity through Sport and Recreation Victoria's Regional Sports Infrastructure Fund for this project that we’ll pursue but before we do, we’re testing the merits of the proposal with the community.
