The next stage of Warrnambool City Council’s CBD footpath renewal program , with ageing asphalt footpaths in Lava, Koroit and Timor streets to be rebuilt.

The works will cover sections of Lava Street, Koroit Street and Timor Street between Liebig and Banyan streets, replacing worn, patchy and uneven asphalt with new, smooth surfaces.

Work is starting in Lava Street before progressing to Koroit Street and Timor Street. Work is expected to be complete by late November, depending on weather conditions.

The project forms part of Council’s ongoing program to renew asphalt footpaths throughout the Warrnambool CBD as they reach the end of their useful life. Sections of footpath have already been renewed in Lava, Kepler, Gilles, Fairy and Banyan streets, as well as Raglan Parade.

Properties will remain accessible for the vast majority of the works. Access will need to be restricted for a few hours to remove the existing footpath, and then again while the new asphalt is laid, however the footpath and properties will be accessible in between these times.

Warrnambool Mayor Cr Ben Blain said that the finished result would be a much smoother footpath.

“The asphalt footpaths become worn and uneven over many years, and we are progressively working our way through the city centre and making them safer and easier for everyone to use,” he said.

“An important part of the planning for this multi-year project is cooperating with utility companies who may need to access their infrastructure beneath the surface of the footpaths.

“For example, with the AusNet gas works currently under way in Warrnambool, we’ve worked with them to only schedule footpath renewals in areas that they have already completed their gas works in.

“We know there are still more asphalt footpaths to be rebuilt across the city centre and these will be done in stages over the coming years, but if you ever encounter a hazard on any footpath across the city, please contact us so we can investigate.

Cr Blain thanked nearby residents and businesses in advance for their patience while the work took place.

“Our staff have been working directly with businesses and property owners in the affected areas ahead of construction to minimise disruptions,” he said.

“There may be short-term changes to vehicle and pedestrian movements during the project, so please be aware and observe all signage.”

Council staff will continue to liaise with impacted properties as the project progresses.
