New life for sister city relationship

A A big crowd gathered at the Miura Friendship Garden on Tuesday August 11 for the planting of a new Banksia serrata, grown from a seed collected from the original banksia planted when the garden opened in 1998.

Warrnambool and Miura have shared a sister city relationship since 1992, with generations of students and community members taking part in exchanges between the two cities.

Mayor Cr Ben Blain read a message from the Mayor of Miura Kaichi Deguchi, while Deputy Mayor Cr Matt Walsh shared a message from the Consul-General of Japan in Melbourne Tokuro Furuya.

Warrnambool’s most recent Miura exchange teacher Brooke Altmann also spoke about her experiences living and working in Japan and the value of the sister city relationship.
