A new 50kw public electric vehicle charger is now operating in the Flagstaff Hill carpark.
Warrnambool City Councillor Richard Ziegeler said that the charger would help drive tourism to Warrnambool.
“In the first half of 2023, over 8 per cent new cars bought in Australia were electric,” he said.
“That’s more than double the 2022 rate, so things are growing rapidly.
“For anyone travelling with an electric vehicle, they need the surety that they will be able to find a charger, and by giving them that peace of mind, we hope to attract more visitors to Warrnambool.
“The location is perfect too as we have a large car park right next to Flagstaff Hill and the Visitor Information Centre, and a short walk from the CBD, Lake Pertobe and the foreshore.
“We’re reaching a point where electric vehicle charging stations aren’t just a nice to have, they are key pieces of infrastructure that not only support tourism, but help everyone transition to lower emissions vehicles and the significant environmental benefits they bring.
“At Council, we have committed to becoming a carbon neutral organisation by 2026 and we aim to be a carbon neutral community by 2040.”
“We were able to access $40,000 in grant funding via the Victorian Government’s Destination Charging Across Victoria Program to help offset the construction costs of the new charger, and users will pay 40c/kw to charge their vehicles.”
The 50kw charging station can charge two vehicles simultaneously, with one charger equipped with a CHAdeMO plug and the other with a CCS 2 plug, making it suitable for most electric vehicles, with motorists also having the option to use their own adapter if needed.
