Work began in late September 2025 to improve safety at Warrnambool’s central bus interchange in Lava Street.
The project includes:
- Replacing the existing pedestrian crossing with a new, raised pedestrian crossing approximately 40m to the east
- Construction of improved loading and unloading areas for buses
- A lighting upgrade
- Improved drainage infrastructure
- Fixing the road surface
- Fixing the footpaths
- Installing utilities in preparation for a new public toilet
Project background
The central bus interchange was moved from Koroit Street (between Liebig and Kepler streets) as part of the City Centre Renewal project, which ran from 2016 to 2017.
While initially a temporary measure, following community consultation, Council decided to make this move permanent, and to seek funding for safety improvements.
A public survey completed by over 200 people found that Lava Street was the most preferred location for the interchange.
Construction timeframe and traffic impacts
The project was delivered from late September to mid-December 2025.
Future funding
Council will continue to seek funding for new CCTV cameras for the area, and a new public toilet to be located at the south-eastern corner of the Liebig-Lava roundabout.
