In order to reduce disruptions, major road rehabilitation work in Lava Street will be undertaken at night.
Work will begin on the evening of Sunday December 7, and is expected to be finished by Friday December 12, weather permitting.
This work will see the Lava Street road surface and foundations fully rebuilt between Liebig and Banyan streets.
Warrnambool Mayor Ben Blain said that the decision to carry out the works at night was about keeping the city centre moving during the day.
“By doing night works, it means that the street will be able to be open during the day,” he said.
“On-street parking will also be available, and as we get closer to Christmas, we know that more people will be heading into the city centre.
“We’re reducing disruptions as much as possible, and thank you once again to everyone for your patience.”
A partial road closure will begin from 7pm each night, with a full road closure from 7.30pm and work to begin following the departure of the final buses of the day.
Cr Blain said that it made sense to align the road works with the bus interchange safety upgrade, which is also under way.
“Work on the bus interchange project is progressing well, with a new raised pedestrian crossing, new lighting and better bus interchanges being built,” he said.
“And with this section of Lava Street really showing its age with some large cracks forming, it made sense to combine the projects, along with some footpath work that needed to be done.
“The end result will be a Lava Street that’s easier to get around and safer for everyone, whether they’re walking, using a mobility aid, catching a bus, riding a bike or driving a vehicle.”
Works in Lava Street are anticipated to be finalised over the coming fortnight, with the area fully reopened prior to the Christmas period.
