Detox Your Home - Annual Household Chemical Collection

Safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals at a free Sustainability Victoria Detox your Home event, without harming your health or the environment.

Household chemicals such as bleach, pesticides, weed killers, cleaning products, cosmetics, and cooking oil should never be put in your rubbish bins or poured down the drain.

Detox your Home events are drive-through and contactless.

Thank you to everyone who attended Detox Your Home on Saturday March 22, 2025. We will publish the date for the 2026 event when it has been confirmed.

Detox Your Home events accept:

  • Acids and alkalis 
  • Aerosol cans (empty cans go in household recycling)
  • Anti-freeze, brake fluid, car body filler, car wax cleaners – ammonia based
  • Coolant
  • Cosmetics
  • Detergents, disinfectants and drain cleaners
  • Fertiliser
  • Floor-care products and waxes
  • Fuels – petrol, diesel, kerosene, other
  • Glues – water-based and solvents
  • Herbicides and weed killers
  • Insect spray and pesticides
  • Nail polish and remover
  • Oven cleaner
  • Thinners, turps and paint stripper
  • Pool chemicals
  • Rat poison
  • Solvents
  • Transmission fluid
  • Wood preservatives and finishes (oils and varnish)

Detox your Home does not accept:

  • Ammunition or firearms - these can be taken to Warrnambool’s police station located at 214 Koroit Street, or to Warrnambool Diving & Firearms located at 179A Fairy Street.
  • Asbestos - this can be taken to WestVic Waste at 3 Hammond Place, for a fee.
  • Batteries: car and household varieties - there are numerous battery drop off locations across Warrnambool, they can be found at most supermarkets, transfer stations and even the Council’s Civic Centre. Car batteries can be dropped of at Super Cheap Auto, Burson Auto Parts, Bridgestone Service Centre, Garden Tyrepower and Ag Warehouse for free.
  • Chemicals used by businesses - businesses are required to organise their waste management privately.
  • Farm chemicals - as businesses, farms are are required to organise their waste management privately.
  • Fire extinguishers - these can be taken to Southwest Cylinder Test and Fire Equipment Maintenance Services located at 11 Chatham Court, for a fee.
  • Fluorescent light bulbs, compact fluorescent lamps and tubes - these can be taken to the Cleanaway transfer station at 355 Koroit Street.
  • Gas bottles - we recommend you contact the gas bottle provider to confirm if they take used bottles. Failing this you can drop off the standard gas bottles at, the Cleanaway transfer station at 355 Koroit Street and WestVic Waste at 3 Hammond Place, for a fee.
  • Motor oil - small amounts (under 10L) of old motor oil can be taken to Supercheap Auto at 84 Raglan Parade. You can also take motor oil to a transfer station that accepts oils such as Cleanaway at 355 Koroit Street and WestVic Waste at 3 Hammond Place.
  • Paint - drop off paint for free at any Paintback drop off location.

  • reduce the risk to the environment and human health
  • help keep our waterways clean
  • prevent chemicals from ending up in landfill
  • reuse precious resources
