A major new footpath to better connect the Warrnambool Industrial Estate has been completed.
The 1.7km path links Merrivale Drive with McMeekin Road, Albert Street and Braithwaite Street.
Warrnambool Mayor Cr Ben Blain said that the footpath project was Council’s largest in at least 20 years.
“This is a really important project that better connects an industrial estate home to almost 250 businesses, while also improving links with Merrivale,” he said.
“The footpath was completed in sections, and as each section was completed, it was already being used by people walking in the area.
“We know there are a lot of people who work in the area who walk to work, and this is going to make things a lot saver for them, as well as for people walking between businesses throughout the day.
“At also better connects Merrivale with West Warrnambool and destinations like Victoria Park.
“Thank you to the Australian Government for supporting this project and helping to create a more walkable Warrnambool.”
The footpath was identified as a priority project in Council’s Principal Pedestrian Network Plan (PPN).
“The PPN has been an extremely useful guide for Council because it was shaped by more than 300 people, all of whom shared their ideas about where important links were missing from Warrnambool’s footpath network,” Cr Blain said.
“It has helped us identify projects that make walking a more practical option for people getting to work, school, shops and other destinations.
“Over the past four years, footpaths along Mortlake Road, Simpson Street, Taits Road, Foster Street and at Wavelinks Park were all completed after being identified in the PPN.
“There’s still more work to do, but each year we’re building and renewing more and more footpaths to improve our network.”
The new footpath is a $533,000 project and was jointly funded by Council and the Australian Government via the Active Transport Fund.
