A Council Community Development Fund grant has helped the Archers of Warrnambool stay on target.
In August the archery club received a grant of $5,000 for its Easy Move Target Stands project.
The club had been using home-made timber target stands and, while they did the job, they were heavy, difficult to move, needed regular repairs and did not look professional.
Club president Jim Burrell said the target stands were past their use-by date and because they were heavy and cumbersome they were not inclusive, because only a few club members could manoeuvre them into position.
The grant has changed that.
The club made a target stand template then turned to local engineering firm Spikin’s Engineering to see what could be done.
Mr Burrell said the Spikin’s team was great to work with and made a site visit before constructing and delivering the new strong, lightweight stands which are made from aluminium.
He said the stands can now be moved into position by just all club members.
“We really value what the Council has been able to do for us,” Mr Burrell said.
“The new target stands will last many years.”
Hopkins River ward representative Cr Willy Benter said the Archers of Warrnambool project was a great example of how local groups and clubs could make use of the fund.
“It’s a really good outcome,” Cr Benter said.
“The stands will last many years; more club members will be able to help set up an archery session and the risk of injury has been reduced because the new stands are lightweight and easy to move into position.
“And the grant was invested locally because we had a Warrnambool-based firm with the necessary skills and experience to do the job.”
The club is thriving with a healthy membership of almost 50 who gather regularly for practice and competitions at a shooting range at Allansford.
Warrnambool clubs and organisations are encouraged to consider whether they have a project or initiative that could be assisted by a grant from the Community Development Fund.
The Community Development Fund to support as operated since 1999 to support not-for-profit groups, based in Warrnambool, to fund projects and activities that contribute to the liveability of the City.
While the fund aims to improve the liveability of the City, priority is placed on proposals that;
• Focus on addressing access and inclusion outcomes for women & girls and people with a disability
• Proposals that target and encourage participation and community involvement in creative outcomes.
• Improve facilities to enhance accessibility (including disability, cultural, gender, functional access) and shared use.
