The upgraded Eastern Oval at Brierly Recreation Reserve was officially opened on February 14 by Mayor Cr Ben Blain and member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora.

Depending on the season, the new playing surface accommodates a cricket oval or two soccer fields.

"With the new playing surface featuring automated irrigation, improved drainage and lighting, it means that day or night, winter or summer, Brierly provides more opportunities for more people to be active and have fun playing team sports," Cr Blain said.

The project received $1 million from the Victorian Government's Sports Infrastructure Fund, an amount matched by Council.

"Thank you to the Victorian Government for investing $1 million into this project," Cr Blain said.

"With stage one of the Brierly Reserve redevelopment complete, we are now focused on advocating for funding to deliver stage two, which will include the construction of a sports and community hub that will include female-friendly changerooms and space for groups to meet."
