An art exhibition created by local high school students opened today as part of South West Youth Fest celebrations.
South West Youth Fest – the local branch of the statewide Victorian Youth Fest – includes events either for young people or created for the wider community by young people.
The exhibition is called Artolescence and is being hosted at the F Project in Timor Street.
It was made possible via a $3000 grant from the Victorian Government.
“I'm delighted to see Artolescence, the amazing artworks designed by and for young people in Warrnambool, perfectly capturing the spirit of YouthFest 2023, which is all about celebrating the ideas and achievements of Victoria's young people," Minister for Youth Natalie Suleyman said.
Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora congratulated everyone involved.
"I'm proud of the terrific talents of the young people who have created Artolescence here in Warrnambool as part of YouthFest, congratulations all!" she said.
Warrnambool Mayor Cr Debbie Arnott said that she was impressed with the exhibition.
“Art really is an expression of the artist, so for the young people involved to share a piece of themselves with the wider community – I think it’s very powerful and very impressive,” she said.
“YouthFest gives our region’s youth not just a chance to get involved in the community, but a chance to shape the community by creating and curating events like this.”
Young artist Franke Bourke is one of 80 young people involved in the exhibition. She created a lino print and said it was great to see it hanging in the F Project.
“It feels amazing. It’s definitely an experience.”
Fellow artist Chelsea Crawley-Walsh has two artworks included in the exhibition: a pencil drawing on wood and a photography piece.
“It’s super exciting, I’m shaking at how fun this is,” she said.
The exhibition runs until October 15.
South West Youth Fest activities continue over the next month with an open mic night, video game competitions, a craft workshop, an event for young writers, a book club and a documentary screening.
