Research suggests that one of the easiest ways to improve fitness and reduce the risk of a slew of deadly diseases is to go for a walk.

The Warrnambool City Council is hosting its annual Walk4Wellness on Tuesday October 13 as part of Walktober, Celebrage and Mental Health Week.

Archie Graham Community Centre Coordinator Mary McLeod said walking is the perfect entry-level exercise.

“For people who currently don’t exercise regularly, walking is the cheapest, easiest and most social way to improve their health,” she said.

“Everyone knows the positive effects that exercise and social contact have in leading a healthy life.

“Walk4Wellness is about making it as easy and attractive as possible for everyone to go for a walk.

“This is an opportunity to have a bit of exercise, a social chat and a bite to eat.

“We already have 170 walkers registered, so we are hoping for a big turnout.

“If you haven’t been down to the promenade in a while, it can be easy to forget just how fantastic a stroll along Warrnambool’s coastline can be.”

Walkers will leave The Pavilion at 10.30am for either a 2km or 5km return journey along Warrnambool’s promenade.

A gold coin donation is requested with a light lunch to follow the walk.

According to the Victorian Government’s Better Health website, just 30 minutes of walking every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance. It can also reduce the risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers.
