While Maremma dogs are trained to protect the Middle Island penguin colony, who protects the Maremmas?

The Vet Group has come on board as an official partner of the Middle Island Project, providing full veterinary care for the six Maremma dogs. Their sponsorship includes vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, grooming and check-ups.

Practice Manager Libbie Gracie said that there was a natural synergy between the Vet Group and the Middle Island Project.

“At the Vet Group, we’re all about helping animals in need,” she said.

“The Maremmas are probably the city’s most famous dogs and they do an amazing job, yet they are still animals who need to be cared for.

“The Middle Island Project holds a special place in the hearts of the Warrnambool community and we are honoured and excited to support this ecologically-sound project.”

Middle Island Project Chair Dr Anne Wallis said that while the Warrnambool City Council, Deakin University and the Warrnambool Coastcare Landcare Network were heavily involved in the project, it still relied on community support.

“Without the generous contributions of local businesses and the community, the project wouldn’t be able to run,” she said.

“I’d like to thank The Vet Group, long-time sponsors Pet Stock, and everyone else who has contributed to making this world-first conservation project a reality.”
