Time to update your pet rego details

News Article Date:
Tuesday, 4 February 2020

With pet registration renewal notices to be sent out in March, now is a good time for pet owners to update pet and contact details with Council.

“It’s really important to let Council know if you have changed address or if your pet has passed away,” Council Chief Executive Officer Peter Schneider said.

“Under Victorian legislation it is the responsibility of dog and cat owners to register pets with their local council.

“To ensure pet owners receive their registration renewals we must have up-to-date contact details”.

Each year across all Victorian councils, pet registrations are due on April 10.

Owners of new pets must register their animals for the first time.

“New pet owners will need to come to the Civic Centre at 25 Liebig Street with microchip data and documents which will let us know whether the animal is desexed,” Mr Schneider said.

“And if you are a pensioner you are entitled to discounted pet registration.”

Pet registration costs in 2020 are $70 for a sterilised dog and $70 for a sterilised cat.

Pensioners receive a 50 per cent discount on pet registration.

A portion of revenue from pet registrations goes to the Victorian Government with the remainder going to services such as maintenance and renewal of signage (eg dog off-lead areas), complaint investigations, pound operation, 24-hour emergency Local Laws service, educational material and locating owners of lost animals.

“Over 2018-2019 Council officers also investigated 16 dog attacks,” Mr Schneider said.

“We received 210 complaints about animals causing a nuisance and 97 dog-at-large complaints.

“When officers find a lost dog, the first priority is to return it directly to its owners rather than take it to the animal pound.

“In fact, most of the animals at the pound have been taken there by members of the public.

“Over 2018-19 our Local Laws team returned 143 pets directly to owners and impounded 203 pets, of which 66 were cats.

“Members of the public took 582 pets to the pound, including 445 cats.”
