Six local start-ups aiming to pitch perfect

News Article Date:
Wednesday, 18 September 2019

What do hard surfboard cases, a healthcare training app, regional podcasting, custom small houses, energy efficiency tests for homes and a clothing recycling system have in common?

They are all start-up business ideas from creative South West people vying for up to $10,000 in funding as part of the Ideas Place Pitch Night and Wrap Party on September 19.

Launched in February, the Ideas Place is a small business start-up incubator that helps local bright-sparks build their ideas into sustainable businesses.

More than 20 events, workshops and masterclasses throughout the year will culminate with six finalists pitching their business idea to a panel of judges in a format similar to popular TV show “Shark Tank”.

Thanks to funding from the Fletcher Jones Foundation, one business will win $10,000 with all other finalists receiving $2000 to go towards their business idea.

Ideas Place Go-To Guy Gareth Colliton said that the program had helped to foster a new breed of creative thinkers.

“The Ideas Place has unearthed more than 40 people in our region with new business ideas,” he said.

“Throughout the course of the year, they have been able to get together and build their networks while learning how to get their business ideas up and running.

“While there could be only six finalists for the pitch night, I wouldn’t be surprised if many more of the businesses we’ve worked with went on to big things.

“Our region has always been home to innovative thinkers, and I’d like to invite everyone to join us to help celebrate an amazing year at the Ideas Place while being inspired by six incredible start-up business ideas.”

The Ideas Place Pitch Night and Wrap Party is at the Fletcher Jones Factory on Thursday September 19 from 7pm – 9pm.
