Senior of the Year nominations open

News Article Date:
Friday, 8 July 2016

Nominations for the 2016 Senior of the Year Award are now open.

Supported by Anchor Point and the Warrnambool City Council, the award recognises the outstanding contribution Warrnambool residents aged 60 and over make in supporting and inspiring others within the community.

All volunteers deserve recognition and the Warrnambool Senior of the Year is one way to recognise people who many in the community may not be aware of, usually someone who has been quietly working for the good of the community for a very long time.

The Senior of the Year will be presented in a ceremony on Wednesday,  September 28 at the Anchor Point Village in conjunction with the launch of ‘Celebrage’, the Warrnambool Seniors Festival.

The Warrnambool Seniors Festival ‘Celebrage’ is an opportunity to celebrate the increasing role older people play in our community through volunteer work by imparting knowledge and experience, and helping their families and other members of the community.

Pictured is last year's Senior of the Year winner, Tim Carlton.

Mr Carlton's community involvement began in 1959 when he moved from Sydney to Warrnambool after being head-hunted by Fletcher Jones to work at his factory as the Chief Industrial Engineer.

He became involved with his children’s schools and their interests including helping to build the Brucknell Scout Camp, learning to use a jackhammer while volunteering to build the Warrnambool swimming pool and being involved in replacing many kilometres of fencing after the tragic Ash Wednesday fires.

He is also a life member of the Warrnambool Lions Club, the Probus Club and the Triton Woodworkers Club.

For more information and to submit a nomination, download the nomination form at the link to the right or visit the Archie Graham Centre on Timor St.

Nominations close on September 9.
