Renewal moves to final section of Liebig Street

Works on the southern section of Liebig Street will begin on May 7 as part of the final stage of the 2018 City Centre Renewal program.

This year the $15 million City Centre Renewal has focused on the “dining precinct” of Liebig Street which is the block between Timor and Koroit streets.

The main construction elements for the northern section of the block have been completed and this part of the street is now reopened to traffic.

“We were able to reopen the roundabout at the intersection of Liebig and Koroit streets earlier this week,” Warrnambool Mayor Cr Robert Anderson said.

“This now means that on Monday, May 7, we will start work on the southern section of the block.

“The removal of the old footpath, road paving, vegetation and street furniture is a significant milestone in this final stage of renewing Liebig Street.

“Council remains committed to delivering the work while minimising the impact on business so while the work is under way in the southern section people will still have access to their favourite shops, cafes and restaurants.

“And we are still running the Find the Five promotion with loads of discounts and prizes to be won.”

Council’s Director City Infrastructure Scott Cavanagh said work on the northern section of the block had progressed smoothly.

“Construction crews made the most of generally dry weather and long hours of daylight between February and the end of April,” Mr Cavanagh said.

“We’re well prepared for the next stage although it will be more challenging because we’re heading towards the wetter months and we’re working in the section of the street that has the steepest gradient.”

“The work in the northern section doesn’t stop yet. Visitors to the city centre will begin to see more street furniture and planting along with the installation of bollards.”
