Rail funding resolved

Improvements to the Warrnambool to Geelong railway line will proceed with the Australian Government yesterday committing funds to the project.

Warrnambool City Council welcomed the announcements by the Australian and Victorian governments.

“This is fabulous news for Warrnambool and the Great South Coast,” Mayor Cr Kylie Gaston said.

“There is now an agreement to invest $114 million on the Warrnambool line to upgrade track and signaling.

“This provides scope to provide more rail services for Great South Coast residents and for the newer V/Locity trains to operate between Warrnambool and Geelong.

“Improved public transport means better social connectivity and improved two-way opportunities to conduct business, access sporting and cultural events, educational institutions and medical services.

“And it will also be beneficial for the movement of freight by rail.

“I would like to acknowledge the work done to improve our rail service by the Premier Daniel Andrews, Transport Minister Jacinta Allan and the Member for Wannon Dan Tehan.”

The upgrade to the line had been announced earlier this year but required confirmation of federal funding.

Along with upgrading the line, improvements are scheduled for the railway station precinct. In January the Victorian Government announced it would fund the addition of at least 100 new car parking spaces at the eastern end of the railway station precinct, along with a lighting upgrade.

New bus shelters and seating will also be installed at the Koroit Street bus interchange and at the Deakin University bus stop as part of the project.

The Victorian Government also invested $10 million to upgrade 20 high-risk rail crossings between Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool.

This project is allowing rail speed restrictions to be lifted which had resulted in longer travel times.
