Nature to nurture kindergarten kids

News Article Date:
Wednesday, 31 May 2017

Children from the Warrnambool City Council’s Mahogany Kindergarten had the chance to get closer to nature today, with the first Nature Kindergarten session held at Victoria Park.

New in 2018, Mahogany, Florence Collins and City kindergartens will incorporate Nature Kindergarten into their programs.

This will see children learning in bushland, at the beach, among rock pools and at gardens and parks on a regular basis.

“Research shows that children benefit greatly when they learn through active engagement in the natural environment,” Warrnambool City Council Manager Children’s and Family Services Tina McLeod said.

“In Warrnambool, we’re lucky to have such rich and diverse landscapes at our doorstep, and we are taking the opportunity to use these spaces to help educate and engage some of our youngest residents.”

The city’s youngsters, along with their parents, will get a glimpse of what next year might have in store for them at Warrnambool City Council Kinder Open Day on June 5.

All 10 Council-run kindergartens will be open to the public from 9am until noon while Central, South and East Warrnambool kindergartens will also be open from 1pm-3pm.

Ms McLeod said that open day was a terrific way for parents and children to learn more about the services on offer.

“For children, open day can help build excitement before they start kinder next year,” she said.

“Beginning kinder is an important milestone for children, and being able to visit some potential sites and take part in activities can help make them more comfortable ahead of their attendance in 2018.

“For parents, our staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and to give you all the information you need to make the best decision for
your child.”
All children in Victoria are eligible to access a funded kindergarten program in the year before they attend school.

All Warrnambool City Council kindergartens have achieved an “exceeding” rating under the National Quality Standard, which is a nationally recognised rating and assessment process for early years education services.

Kinder enrolments also open on June 5. Enrolment packs will be available online and at Council’s kindergartens from this date.
