Meeting scheduled for April 6 cancelled

News Article Date:
Tuesday, 31 March 2020

Warrnambool City Council has cancelled its April 6 meeting to help contain the spread of COVID-19.

“A decision was made to cancel the meeting because it is not possible to hold a public meeting and comply with social distancing regulations,” Warrnambool City Council Chief Executive Officer Peter Schneider said.

“To hold an open public meeting would pose too great a risk for those attending.

“Under the Local Government regulations councillors have to be physically present at a meeting which meant that holding an online meeting was not permissible.

“Together with neighbouring councils and representative bodies we have asked the Victorian Government to make changes that would allow for electronic meetings to be conducted but this is still not an option at this time.

“The community should be reassured that Council’s executive team is still able to make decisions that will help keep the community safe.

“This includes modifying or closing services.

“I would like to thank the Warrnambool community for their understanding as we respond together to the threat posed by COVID-19.

“Remember we all have a part to play in helping to stop the spread of this virus.

“Washing hands regularly and maintaining social distancing are helpful measures we can all take.”

Residents experiencing financial hardship can apply online via Council’s website to defer a range of payments including rates and pet registrations.

“We’re also encouraging the business community to look at the support options available from the Australian and Victorian governments,” Mr Schneider said.

“If businesses are unsure of where to start we have created a useful set of links on our website at www.warrnambool.vic.gov.au/covid-19-business-support
