Local clubs share in $74,000 of community grants

Thirty-four clubs will share in almost $74,000 in grants thanks to the 2015/16 Warrnambool City Council Community Development Fund.

Successful projects include the Indoor Bowls Warrnambool Association’s purchase of bowls equipment for people with a disability, the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association’s new Under 16 girl’s competition, a watering trailer for the Port Fairy to Warrnambool Rail Trail Committee and new tools for the Warrnambool Triton Woodworkers.

The annual fund was set up in 1999 to provide assistance to local clubs and organisations in developing and providing sporting, recreational, cultural or environmental sustainability programs, projects, activities or events.

Council provides $2 for each dollar contributed by the successful applicant.

Warrnambool City Council Manager Recreation and Culture Russell Lineham said that he was happy to see such a diverse group of clubs apply for grants.

“From gem stones to gardens, actors to athletics and badminton to bowls, Warrnambool is home to some great clubs,” he said.

“The Community Development Fund allows clubs to either purchase items or run programs and events which help encourage more people in Warrnambool to become more physically and socially active or help the environment.

“Congratulations to all of the successful applicants and I look forward to seeing the community benefits over the next 12 months.”

Cr Jacinta Ermacora said that the fund is a great example of all of the good things that are happening in our community.

“I’m always absolutely amazed and humbled when we present these cheques to the clubs because if you ask them what they are going to do with the money, it is the most amazing range of generous, thoughtful and clever things,” she said.

“Participating in a club or doing community service is a healthy thing to do and there is plenty of research that shows that people who are involved in our community are healthier and happier.”

Council received 46 applications for this year’s fund, 34 of which met eligibility requirements.
