Key considerations of Great South Coast Regional AFL, Cricket and Netball Strategy

News Article Date:

Councils across the region have a significant investment in facilities for AFL, cricket and netball.

The draft Great South Coast Regional AFL, Cricket and Netball Strategy, which is currently being finalised, aims to provide the framework for the development of the three major sports in the region.

The need for facilities to be renewed and fit for purpose is key a priority emerging from the research and consultation undertaken to date. Other key considerations the strategy will address include:
- consideration of population and participation changes
- the establishment of a hierarchy for facilities
- providing better facilities for females
- investment in agreed priorities that support participation outcomes
- new and innovative funding models

The strategy is being developed by the Warrnambool, Moyne, Corangamite, Southern Grampians and Glenelg municipalities in partnership with AFL Victoria, AFL Western District, Netball Victoria and Cricket Victoria.

Warrnambool City Council Manager Recreation and Culture Russell Lineham said that the strategy would provide a game plan for the future of facilities and programs in the region.

“More than 15,000 people participate in football, cricket and netball across the five municipalities,” he said.

“The strategy will identify key priorities and projects which we can collectively work towards achieving.

“Audits of all 101 facilities in the region were combined with the latest participation and demographic data to help inform the strategy.”

The draft strategy will be available for public comment in late 2018.
