Warrnambool City Council is seeking community feedback on a draft strategy which will guide the selection and support of festivals and events in Warrnambool.

“Over the past eight months Council has worked with stakeholders to review the existing approach to events and to then develop the Draft Warrnambool Events Strategy 2018-2022,” Manager Visitor Economy David McMahon said.

“The draft strategy is not an events list but aims to provide a framework to achieve the right mix of events for Warrnambool.

“Events are super-important in regional areas.

“They play a critical role in community health and wellbeing, create economic stimulus, encourage community pride and participation and generate legacy infrastructure and capacity.”

The draft strategy recommends a change in the mix of events that Council supports through a new portfolio approach which will allow new events which target growing markets.

It also recommends broadening the type and spread of events throughout the year.

“Events around Victoria and Australia are changing rapidly and profoundly,” Mr McMahon said.

“More events, growth in targeted ‘interest group’ events and competition in the domestic tourism market can all impact on visitation to events that Council may support or run.

“The development of a new Events Strategy provides us with an opportunity to ensure that our visitor economy is being well served by the events and festivals Council chooses to support.”

Council is also running two community forums where people will have an opportunity to discuss their ideas for the Events Strategy.

The forums will be held at the Civic Centre, 25 Liebig Street, on April 12 at 11am and 7pm.

The feedback on the draft strategy will be used in the development of a final strategy to be adopted by Council at an open meeting later in the year.

Feedback on the draft strategy will be accepted until 5pm, April 23, 2018.

People keen to attend one of the forums are asked to call Events and Promotions Unit on 5559 4986 or email cjewell [at] warrnambool [dot] vic [dot] gov [dot] au.
