An evening with Susan Alberti

One of Australia’s true trailblazers will speak in Warrnambool this week in the final event of the Great South Coast Speaker Series this Thursday.

Susan Alberti AC has run a major construction business and raised more than $200 million for medical research. But she is probably best known as “the footy lady” – the former vice president of the Western Bulldogs who was integral in the establishment of the AFLW.

The 2018 Victorian of the Year has achieved great things in the traditionally male-dominated industries of business and Aussie Rules football and will speak about the importance of determination in chasing your goals.

“I’ve been through a journey in life where girls didn’t get the opportunity to do the things that they wanted to do,” she said.

“In my case with football it was ‘you’re 15, hang up your boots, there’s nowhere to go. Go home and learn to knit.’

“I did that as well, but I kept kicking the footy in the backyard and down at the local park with my brother.”

Ms Alberti’s success is even more remarkable considering the personal tragedies she has overcome, including the tragic death of her only child due to complications arising from Type 1 Diabetes.

“I’ve had challenges. So what? Everybody has challenges in life. But you can either sink or swim, and I chose to swim,” she said.

“Young women today have the opportunity to do almost anything they set their mind to.

“Don’t take no for an answer. Never ever give up. And if something is wrong, don’t be afraid to call it out. I have never held back when I’ve seen something that is wrong or somebody has been wronged.

“That’s what I’d like to see in young people. If something is not right, be respectful when talking to people, but call it out and question it.”

An Evening with Susan Alberti will be held at the Lighthouse Theatre on Thursday November 21 at 7pm.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for concession card holders and children.
