Cycling elite Warrnambool bound

News Article Date:
Thursday, 7 December 2017

Some of the world’s best cyclists will roll into Warrnambool in February with the city announced as a host of the 2018 Jayco Herald Sun Tour.

The course for the five day event was announced in St Kilda today.

Stage One of the UCI sanctioned race will begin in Colac on February 1 and follow the Great Ocean Road to Allansford before heading past Logans Beach and the Hopkins River Mouth ahead of what is sure to be a thrilling finish at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village on Merri Street.

Stage Two will begin on February 2 at Flagstaff Hill with the race to pass through Cobden and Camperdown on its way north to Buninyong near Ballarat.

Warrnambool City Council Manager Visitor Economy David McMahon said that today’s announcement is a testament to Warrnambool’s capacity to host world class events.

“While the start list is yet to be confirmed, 2016 Giro d'Italia runner-up Esteban Chaves has announced that he will compete, so that gives you an idea of the calibre of cyclists who will be coming to Warrnambool,” he said.

“With this race, usually if a stage finishes in one town, the next stage starts in another town, so to have Stage One finish in Warrnambool and Stage Two begin here is significant.

“In addition to the economic benefits that come from having the race stop in Warrnambool overnight, it means that our city will be treated to two days of elite cycling.

“An event of this stature attracts global media coverage with race broadcasts featuring the region’s stunning natural attractions to be beamed across Australia and around the world.”
