Council, TAFE and Young Parents Class partnership nets state award

The Warrnambool City Council’s partnership with South West TAFE and the Warrnambool VCAL Young Parents class has been recognised as the best VCAL collaboration in the state.

The group won the Partnership Award at the 2020 VCAL Achievement Awards held in a virtual format on April 28.

The Warrnambool VCAL Young Parents class allows people with pre-school children to further their education in a flexible environment alongside their child.

Since 2016, Council has worked with the class to deliver the unBOOLievable event – a three-day calendar of free activities for young families.

More than 700 people took part in the event during Victorian Youth Week in April 2019.

Warrnambool Mayor Tony Herbert praised the class for the hard work they put in to put smiles on hundreds of faces while earning their VCAL qualification.

“They do their course work, they look after their kids, they plan community events – the people in this class are simply amazing, and an asset to the city,” he said.

“Each year, the class has taken on more responsibility for planning the unBOOLievable event as they have learnt more and grown more confident in their own skills.

“The experienced and talented Council staff involved in the project have done a terrific job helping the young parents class learn real-world skills that will last a lifetime.

“I’d also like to congratulate South West TAFE on the crucial role they play too. Without their support, the class simply wouldn’t be possible.

“This shows how strong, collaborative partnerships can deliver significant results both on an individual educational level as well as a wider community level.

“Unfortunately, the 2020 event scheduled for early April had to be postponed, but the skills learnt in organising it will be invaluable. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s hard work come to fruition, hopefully later this year.”

In 2020, Council received a $2000 grant from the Victorian Government as part of Victorian Youth Week to run the unBOOLievable event.
