Warrnambool City Council (WCC) has identified a preferred contractor for the Stage 1 construction of the City Centre Renewal.

Victorian firm 2Construct Pty Ltd was chosen for the $6.109 million contract.

Stage 1 includes the two blocks of Liebig Street between Raglan Parade and Koroit Street.

“This is a significant stage in the City Centre Renewal,” Warrnambool Mayor Cr Kylie Gaston said.

“With the contract in place we will see on-ground work start in February as scheduled.

“I really want to congratulate the community for the work they have put in over the past two years.

“In 2014 thousands of Warrnambool residents provided input into the draft Liebig Streetscape Plan, which was adopted by Council in October 2014.”

Stage 1 will be constructed over February to September next year with Stage 2 of the $15 million city centre renewal – Liebig Street between Timor and Koroit streets and Koroit Street between Liebig and Kepler streets - to take place in February to September 2018.

“I’d also like to acknowledge the backing we received from the federal and state governments for this project,” Cr Gaston said.

“The state and federal governments recognised the strength and value of Council’s City Centre Renewal proposal and each committed $5 million towards the project.

“This complements the $5 million of money from Warrnambool ratepayers directed to renewing our city centre and ensuring it meets the expectations of the community well into the 21st century.”

2Construct has considerable experience on similarly large projects having completed the external civil work for projects including the Royal Children’s Hospital, Stage 1 of Swanston Street, the Camberwell Library and Luna Park.

“Where possible materials and sub-contractors will be sourced locally,” Cr Gaston said.

“A feature of the project will be the extensive use of basalt sourced from Western Victoria.”

Planning for public consultation in relation to a design for Stage 2 is under way.
