Wednesday, 14 November 2018

Four-time national champion Brandon Te Hiko will be among 1100 competitors taking part in the 2018 BMX Victoria State Championships in Warrnambool.

The three day event begins on Friday with the pre-title racing and practice sessions before racing hits top gear for the open state titles on Saturday and Sunday.

Nineteen Warrnambool riders will be among those vying for championships.

Warrnambool City Council Manager Visitor Economy David McMahon said that events like the BMX Victoria State Championships were a great fit for Warrnambool.

“As well as 1100 competitors, we are expecting 1500 family members and spectators to come to Warrnambool for the championships, which is great news for our local economy,” he said.

“Many of the competitors may never have been to Warrnambool before, so hosting major sporting events like this is a great way to promote Warrnambool as a first-class family holiday destination.

“Warrnambool’s redeveloped BMX track is one of the best in the state, and the city is looking forward to hosting the Victorian BMX Championships for the first time since 2001.

“The Warrnambool BMX Club needs to be congratulated for all of the work that they have done to help bring this event to Warrnambool.”

BMX Victoria President Cameron Murray said that he was excited to be in Warrnambool for this year’s state championships.

“The efforts of the local club to prepare the track have been exceptional and we’re looking forward to seeing some great racing on track,” he said.

“We hope the 2500 visitors to this picturesque coastal town get out into the local community when not on track and explore the local businesses and attractions.”

The championships will be officially opened at 11.45am on Saturday with racing from 12.30pm.
