As many as 70 per cent of child car restraints in Warrnambool have been incorrectly fitted or used, according to KidSafe Victoria.
To help ensure the city’s youngest residents reach their destination safely, West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House has partnered with KidSafe to provide free child car restraint fittings or safety checks.
The sessions will be held in the carpark of St Pius X Primary School (enter from Ross St) on March 25 between 10am and 2pm.
Warrnambool Mayor Cr Richard Ziegeler said that the high percentage of child restraints in cars being incorrectly fitted posed a significant safety risk.
“Children’s car seats have a reputation for being difficult to install correctly, and the data bears this out,” he said.
“More than two-thirds of children travelling in local cars today aren’t as safe as they could be.
“This is a free service open to everyone – parents, carers, grandparents and anyone else who travels with babies or young children.
“Not only will the qualified technicians safely install or check your car seat, they will be happy to run you through the process.
“So whether you’d like to get a new car seat completely installed by a professional, or you’d just like the peace of mind knowing that the seat you installed yourself has been fitted correctly, this is the service for you.”
