Pedestrians & Cyclists

TravelSmart aims to create opportunities for more people to become pedestrians and cyclists. Road safety is an important part of making the choice to leave the car at home.

Pedestrians

Remember

  • Use pedestrian facilities - lights, crossings, pedestrian refuges (eg. splitter islands).
  • Make eye contact with drivers so you know they have seen you.
  • At intersections, watch for vehicles turning from both in front and behind you.
  • Don't turn your back on traffic when crossing roads.
  • Don't step out from between parked cars.

Cyclists

The Council is working to support cycling in Warrnambool, creating a network of shared paths, trails and bike lanes. Cyclists and motorists are required to share the road.

Remember

  • Wear bright or reflective clothing.
  • Check your helmet and bike before cycling.
  • Make eye contact with drivers so you know they have seen you.
  • At intersections, watch for vehicles turning from both in front and behind you.
  • If you feel unsafe in traffic move to the footpath, dismount and walk until the you get to a less trafficked area.
  • Plan your trip; avoid heavily trafficked areas- cycling that extra block can be worth it.
  • You can recieve a $50 fine for not wearing a helmet.
  • Helmets must have the Australian Standards sticker.
