Tennis Australia serving up family fun day

News Article Date:
Thursday, 13 November 2014

The Civic Green will be transformed into a hive of tennis activity on Saturday November 15 for the Tennis Australia Great Tennis-tacular.

Warrnambool was selected to host the free community event in the lead up to the 2015 Australian Open due to our enthusiasm for last year’s Australian Open (AO) Blitz.

Great Tennis-tacular attendees will be able to test the speed of their serve, get blown away by the tennis twister, hit the target like the champions, play on the mini courts and have their photo with the Australian Open trophies.

Warrnambool placed sixth out of over 700 towns across Australia in the 2014 AO Blitz, earning the right to be represented by Maria Sharapova in the Australian Open.

Individuals and groups earn points by completing various tennis challenges and logging the results at www.aoblitz.com.au.

The top 256 towns are assigned players in the Australian Open and the more points a town collects, the higher the seeding of their representative.

Warrnambool City Council Events and Promotions Manager Merran Fyfe said that the Great Tennis-tacular will hopefully be the first volley in another successful AO Blitz campaign.

“Tennis is a fun and accessible sport that anyone can play,” Ms Fyfe said.

“To be selected as one of only 20 towns around Australia to host an event like this demonstrates Tennis Australia’s confidence in the strength and inclusiveness of the Warrnambool tennis community.

“We are very happy to work with Tennis Australia and our local tennis clubs to host this terrific community event and we are looking forward to this year’s AO
Blitz.”

The event will be held from 10am-2pm with plenty of prizes on offer including tennis racquets and balls.
