Warrnambool City Council has received a development proposal for a nine-storey apartment building to be situated at the corner of Merri and Gilles streets.

The $20 million development proposal was lodged by Tract Consultants on behalf of Baybern Developments Pty Ltd.

Plans for the 51-apartment building will be placed on public exhibition for a fortnight from October 15.

The plans include two floors of serviced apartments and a ground floor that includes retail space.

Also proposed is basement parking for cars and bicycles.

The building would require the demolition of the former Sandilands Guest House, which was most recently occupied by legal firm, Maddens, but has been vacant for some years.

There is a current permit to demolish the property.

The building design, by Melbourne-based architect Clarke Hopkins Clarke, rises 29m from Gilles St.

Following the public exhibition period the proposal will be referred to an open council meeting for decision.

Plans can be viewed at the Civic Centre, 25 Liebig St.

People have until October 29 to make a submission on the proposal.
