Reid Oval netball pavilion open for use

News Article Date:
Wednesday, 24 September 2014

The recently completed Reid Oval netball pavilion was officially opened by Premier Denis Napthine and Mayor Michael Neoh on Hampden Football Netball League Grand Final day.

The installation of a new electronic scoreboard and upgrades to netball court runoffs to meet Netball Australia standards are scheduled to be complete by the end of 2014.

This project is not the completion, but start of the redevelopment of Reid Oval as the regional premier sports ground.

The project is a recommendation of the Warrnambool Recreation Plan 2007-17 and the Major Reserves Redevelopment and Utilisation Strategy.

Dr Napthine said that the upgrades will help position Reid Oval as Warrnambool’s premier multi-purpose sporting facility.

“Reid Oval plays an important role in contributing to the health and wellbeing of the community by providing high quality sporting and recreational opportunities in Warrnambool,” he said.

“Once the redevelopment is complete, the facility will be able to cater for local league football, cricket and netball matches, and looking forward, state national or even international events, such as AFL practice matches.”

The project was funded by Warrnambool City Council ($220,000), State Government ($200,000), Warrnambool Football Netball Club ($60,000), AL Lane Foundation ($25,000) Gwen and Edna Jones Foundation ($25,000), Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation ($25,000), East Warrnambool Football Netball Club ($20,000), Warrnambool & District Football Netball League ($10,000), Nestles Cricket Club ($5,000) and Hampden Football Netball League ($5,000).

Council is very grateful for the efforts of Gerard Duynhoven who coordinated a total of 175 volunteers donating in excess of 2,250 hours of labour to the services, netball pavilion and court lighting components.

The project was also made possible through $119,000 of in-kind support.
