Survey: Help improve Year 12 attainment rates

News Article Date:
Monday, 1 September 2014

Warrnambool is a city with high rates of kindergarten participation, strong satisfaction rates with facilities and services and our citizens generally feel part of the community (Warrnambool: A Healthy City 2013-17).

Unfortunately, our Year 12 or equivalent education attainment rate is amongst the state’s worst.

According to 2011 census data, only 60.6 per cent of Warrnambool residents aged 20-24 have completed Year 12 or hold an equivalent qualification (Certificate II or above).

The Victorian average is 74.4 per cent, with metropolitan Melbourne faring much better than regional and rural areas.

Alarmingly, while most regions have seen better year 12 or equivalent rates since 2006, Warrnambool’s numbers are dropping.

The Great South Coast Group, an alliance of government, industry and community, has identified improving youth education levels in south-west Victoria as a priority project.

“Beyond the Bell” is an ambitious initiative which aims to identify and implement community actions to address this issue.

The Warrnambool Local Action Group has prepared a survey and wants to hear from people across the community about the issues that are a barrier to educational outcomes for their children, students, clients, friends, families and themselves.

According to the group, low education attainment rates are a community responsibility and input is required from a diverse cross-section of the community in order to properly confront the issue.

Findings will be presented at a community forum in late October with a Warrnambool community action plan to be developed in November and December.

The survey will take 5-7 minutes to complete and can be accessed at www.yoursaywarrnambool.com.au/beyondthebell

To say thank you for completing the survey, all respondents will be entered in a draw to win one of 10 double movie passes.
