Abolition of the Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa (subclass 457)

The recent abolition of the Temporary Work (Skilled) 457 visa has seen this visa replaced by either a Temporary Skilled Shortage (TSS) Short Term stream visa (up to two years)

or Temporary Skilled Shortage (TSS) Medium Term stream visa (up to four years).

For further detail please see: http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work/457-abolition-replacement

To be eligible for subsequent sponsorship to a permanent residency visa, the TSS visa holder must have been on that visa (i.e. the Medium Term stream visa) for a minimum period of three years and be under 45 years of age.

Employers must pay the TSS visa holder at least the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold of $53,900 p.a.

The skilled occupation you wish to sponsor must also be listed on either the DIBP Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) or Medium Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)

(list of eligible occupations) – please see: http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work/Work/Skills-assessment-and-assessing-authorities/skilled-occupations-lists

We would strongly recommend that if you feel you need assistance in negotiating the new visa application process, you engage the services of a registered migration agent or migration lawyer.
