Ziegler Parade bridge at Allansford closed

News Article Date:
Monday, 19 September 2016

As a result of rising river levels Warrnambool City Council has taken the precautionary measure of closing Ziegler Parade Bridge at Allansford.

“The ageing bridge is currently under considerable pressure from the high volumes of water flowing down the Hopkins River,” Manager Infrastructure Development and Projects Justin Hinch said.

“There is also a lot of debris coming down with the water which has the potential to damage the bridge.

“So as a result of the state of the bridge and the conditions we’ve made a decision to close the bridge.”

An alternative route is available via the Garibaldi Lane-Princes Highway intersection.

“It’s anticipated that water levels will subside in the week starting September 18 at which time we’ll assess the condition of the bridge and make a decision on whether it can be reopened,” Mr Hinch said.

“The bridge is scheduled for renewal this financial year and scoping work for this project is under way.

“Council allocated $1.2 million to renew the bridge in its June budget for 2016-2017.”

A 2011 bridge inspection report identified the need to impose a load limit of 14 tonnes until the major upgrade work was completed.

So far this month 110.4mm of rain has been recorded at Warrnambool, a figure well in excess of the long-term average of 66.9mm.
