The state of the city analysed

News Article Date:
Friday, 12 August 2016

Warrnambool’s current economic environment and its emerging trends will be analysed by three of the city’s top economic minds as part of the Great South Coast Small Business Festival.

State of the City: an Economic Perspective will be held on Tuesday August 16 at Deakin University’s Corporate Centre at 163 Timor Street.

This free session will include presentations from Warrnambool City Council's Director of City Growth, Andrew Paton, Director of Teaching at Deakin University’s Department of Economics, Associate Professor Helen Scarborough and historian and author of A Tale of Two Cities –
A History of Modern Warrnambool, Dr Gordon Forth.

The presentations will be followed by an open discussion, with attendees encouraged to pose questions to the panel of experts.

“It will be an audience for people interested in what makes our city’s economy tick and how our city interacts with the region,” Mr Paton said.

“As well as looking at the latest key growth measures and what they mean for our future, our city's transformation over recent decades from a predominantly manufacturing base into a regional service economy will be examined.”

“We will also be comparing how we are performing against other regional cities, which is an important benchmark for how our city is progressing.”

Mr Paton said that despite uncertainties around the dairy industry and the global economy, all forecasts suggest that Warrnambool will continue to grow.

“Warrnambool’s economy continues to be resilient, diverse and growing in significance as the key regional centre of South West Victoria,” he said.

The session will run from 12.30pm until 2.30pm.

While attendance is free, attendees are requested to RSVP via business.warrnambool.vic.gov.au or by calling the Warrnambool City Council economic development unit on 5559 4925.
