Survey on CCTV

News Article Date:
Friday, 5 August 2016

After 18 months of closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) operating in Warrnambool’s city centre, Warrnambool City Council (WCC) is keen to hear how the public feels about this community safety initiative.

WCC Manager Local Laws Ian Fitzgibbon said nine cameras were installed in late 2014 to create a safer environment within the Warrnambool city centre, particularly around the entertainment precinct.

Cameras are installed in Ozone Car Park, the intersections of Timor and Liebig streets, Timor and Gilles streets, Timor and Kepler streets, Koroit and Kepler streets, in Koroit St and Liebig St.

A tenth camera has been installed at the taxi rank and public toilet in Gilles Street.

The CCTV project is a partnership between Warrnambool City Council (WCC) and Warrnambool Police.

A survey in 2013 indicated a high level of community support for CCTV cameras within the city centre.

“We’re now keen to find out how the community feels about safety in the city centre,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

Warrnambool Police report that the CCTV has been a valuable asset.

“It’s a pro-active community safety measure,” Sgt Shane Keogh said.

“There have been 21 instances where footage has been downloaded and presented to court for evidence in prosecuting offenders.

“Police have been able to monitor and investigate incidents including assaults, suspect behaviour and thefts.

“The system is also valuable during special events and weekends for real time monitoring by officers. They can monitor crowds and identify possible offenders.”

People can have their say on CCTV in the city centre by completing the survey at yoursaywarrnambool.com.au

The survey closes on August 15.

Funding for the CCTV system came from the State Government ($168,000) and WCC ($46,000).

WCC maintains the system.
