Park plans unveiled at community party

An open space in East Warrnambool is set to be transformed into a community hub featuring an all-weather basketball court, shared pathways and a scooter and skate loop.

The concept drawings for the project, funded by the Warrnambool City Council and the State Government, will be unveiled during a free community event at Wavelinks Park on Saturday April 16 as part of National Youth Week.

Warrnambool City Council Recreation and Youth Services Manager Kim White said that the event would be a great opportunity to bring the neighbourhood together and present the plans for the park.

“Currently, Wavelinks Park is predominantly used as a thoroughfare, but the National Youth Week event and in time, the site improvements, will show that it can be a destination,” she said.

“A network of paths will connect the area to McGregors Road, Armstrong Grove, Raingill Avenue, Wanstead Street and Fleetwood Court, creating great access for residents from all sides of the park.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing the response to the concept plans ahead of work commencing by September.

“It will be a great event and I’d encourage everyone to come and join in the fun.”

The plans respond to a vision for the park established by the local residents as part of the East Warrnambool Neighbourhood Plan.

Local young people provided feedback on their aspirations for activity areas in September last year with basketball, skate and scooter facilities the most popular responses.

The community event will commence at 11am and feature a giant slide, giant games, an AusKick clinic, live music, a barbecue and kids’ activities.

Another National Youth Week event will be held at the Gateway Church in East Warrnambool on Friday April 15 and will include streetball from 5pm with free pizza, a photo booth and an open mic night from 6.30pm.
Attendees will join an anticipated 20,000 young people taking part in National Youth Week activities around Australia.
