Amor the maremma puppy

Maremma puppy named Amor

News Article Date:
Friday, 1 April 2016

Warrnambool’s newest penguin-protecting maremma dog has been named Amor after passionate environmentalist John Amor.

John was one of Warrnambool’s most driven and engaging environmental advocates, working for many years to improve Warrnambool’s natural environment while inspiring others to join him.

He was also a vital advocate in the initial stages of the Middle Island maremma project.

Sadly, John passed away in 2010.

The name was the most popular choice following more than 1700 votes cast across a shortlist of 10 names.

The shortlist was selected from over 750 names submitted by the public.

Warrnambool City Council Tourism Services Manager Peter Abbott thanked everyone who took part in the naming process and said that Amor was a fitting moniker for the puppy.

“It's terrific that we can name our newest environmental guardian after John Amor, who was integral in making the Middle Island maremma project a reality,” he said.

“John spent so much of his time working to improve our local environment and coastline.

“To see the name Amor win by popular vote shows just how much of an impression John has left on the Warrnambool community.”

John’s son, Jeremiah Amor, said he was proud to see his father honoured by the community.

“John Amor was a devoted father to his family but also devoted to helping the environment wherever he could,” he said.

“But more importantly, whenever someone asked for help in saving something dear to them he would go out of his way and get on the phone and call someone he knew to help them get the job done.”

Amor will continue his training before accompanying current maremma guardians Eudy and Tula to Middle Island for the next penguin breeding season in October.

A second maremma puppy will come to Warrnambool later this year before joining Amor for the following penguin season while Eudy and Tula will transition to their ambassador roles.
