Warrnambool Art Gallery director Vanessa Gerrans will judge the second annual South West International Women’s Day Art Prize.

The new director of the Warrnambool Art Gallery said she was thrilled to have been asked by Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West to judge the region’s leading female art prize, which is open for entry until January 28.

“It is a privilege to part of a process that promotes Australian women artists and champions awareness and cultural diversity in the region,” Ms Gerrans said.

“I greatly admire female artists for their skill and enormous capacity for depth of expression.

“I encourage women of all ages to go online and enter and greatly look forward to viewing the works - I expect the judging will be a very enjoyable challenge.”

Ms Gerrans began her new role at the WAG in September after more than a decade with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) Gallery. She has curated and collaborated on diverse exhibition programs exploring contemporary art, architecture, design and fashion.

Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West Executive Officer Emily Lee-Ack said the region was lucky to have a thriving arts community and a breadth of female experience and talent to call upon for the judging role.

“We are privileged to welcome a curator to the judging role. Vanessa’s broad experience and passion for women’s art will be an amazing asset to this year’s prize, following on from the generous contribution of inaugural judge Carmel Wallace last year.

“As an organisation that works to advance gender equality in all areas of life, we are delighted to have leading women in the arts in our region to take on this important role.”

This year’s art prize has a new category and a new theme. All of the details can be found at www.womenshealthbsw.org.au
