The city of Warrnambool has a new leader, with Cr Kylie Gaston elected mayor at Council’s annual meeting on November 30.

Cr Gaston, the city’s 72nd mayor, was first elected to Council in 2012.

Outgoing mayor Cr Michael Neoh congratulated Cr Gaston on her appointment.

“I’m sure as the leader of this city, you will have a positive influence on the policies and direction of the city,” he said.

“Congratulations, and I'm sure you will be very professional and well-considered, based on what I have seen over the past few years.

In her opening speech as mayor, Cr Gaston recalled moving back to Australia 11 years ago and settling in Warrnambool.

“I fell in love with Warrnambool and I am passionate about our city and its future direction and believe we have marvellous foundations to build upon and the opportunities for our city are boundless,” she said.

“Being on Council is the most fulfilling and interesting role I have undertaken. I am very excited to have the honour of being the mayor of Warrnambool and will work hard with both zest and exuberance to ensure we have a positive and productive year.”

Mayor Gaston praised SouthWest TAFE, Deakin University, the city’s passionate clubs and volunteers as well as Council’s staff.

She is looking forward to new opportunities stemming from the recent airport upgrades, the progression of the safer harbour and the CBD renewal projects, investment in the new industrial precinct and Flagstaff Hill, as well as helping to tackle the region's low Year 12 or equivalent attainment rate.

“I thank my fellow Councillors for having the confidence in me,” Cr Gaston said.

“I’d like to take the opportunity to thank Cr Michael Neoh for his steady leadership and persistent hard work over the past three years.”

Cr Gaston will serve as mayor until a new Council is elected in late 2016.
