Subjects wanted for 3D portraits

News Article Date:
Monday, 16 November 2015

The Warrnambool Art Gallery is seeking the public’s help to participate in a unique 3D art project.

The WAG requires 15 prominent South West residents to be portrait subjects whose likeness will be captured in 3D.

WAG Curator of Exhibitions and Outreach Gareth Colliton said the project was being led by media artists, Cake Industries.

“Cake Industries artists will capture three-dimensional image data scans of participants,” Mr Colliton said.

“The scans will then be manipulated into a digital 3D object, adjusted, added to, and finally fabricated through additive manufacturing (3D printing).

“Although it uses the latest 3D scanning and printing technology, the painstaking process is not dissimilar to 19th century photographic portraits or daguerrotypes. “

The final portraits will then be included in a new media exhibition Experimenta Recharge at WAG, from December 5.

“Experimenta presents the world’s best contemporary media art and is perfectly aligned with the speculative and collaborative focus of WAG as an incubator for ideas,” WAG Director Vanessa Gerrans said.

“The art works in Recharge will charm diverse audiences visiting the gallery this summer.”

Nominees for the 3D project could be influential or prominent members of the community deserving of recognition, someone inspirational from a club or organisation.

Nominations, including a brief biography of the nominee, should be sent to gcolliton@warrnambool.vic.gov.au before Friday, November 20.
