Draft parking strategy out for comment

News Article Date:
Tuesday, 4 August 2015

The community is being invited to comment on Warrnambool City Council’s Draft City Centre Parking Strategy.

The draft strategy has been developed to provide direction on the future supply and management of parking in Warrnambool’s city centre.

“Council committed in its Council Plan to developing a parking strategy as part of the city centre renewal,” Warrnambool Mayor Cr Michael Neoh said.

“With a growing population we need to ensure we meet future parking needs along with meeting current demands.

“The good news is we have more parking spaces now in the city centre than we did in 2009 – we’re up from about 3500 to 3800.

“Some of the recent initiatives have proven popular – new all-day carparks in Fairy Street and Grave Avenue have been taken up by city workers and the $2 daily parking in selected off-street car parks has been embraced.

“The free one-hour parking in Parkers Carpark has also attracted motorists. Each week about 1000 free one-hour parking tickets are being printed and displayed.”

A Council survey showed most respondents were prepared to walk  up to three blocks to make use of free or $2 parking.

The draft strategy’s principles include:

  • providing and accessible parking opportunities for motorists with various price and payment options;
  • reduce parking demand by increasing park and walk behaviours and sustainable transport outcomes such as public transport, cycling and walking;
  • ensure parking management is consistent, equitable and appropriately applied to promote vehicle turnover and availability.
