Carmen Sweet

Sweet chance for local dancers

News Article Date:
Monday, 6 July 2015

Up to ten talented south-west dancers will have the opportunity to perform alongside the professionals when Expressions Dance Company’s production Carmen Sweet comes to Warrnambool and Portland in October.

The choreography has been designed to allow local dancers to participate in this sumptuous production.

The dancers will take centre stage during the introduction of the matador, embellishing his entrance in an important scene.

Lighthouse Theatre Manager Greg Diamantis said that this was an exciting opportunity to perform with a professional company that regularly tours Australia and overseas.

“This is part of our ongoing program to expose ambitious local dancers to a professional dance environment,” he said.

“Following on from the success of direct involvement by local dancers in last year’s production of The Magic Flute, I am sure that the chance to work with the renowned Expressions Dance Company will be a rewarding one.”

The role is suited to female dancers in senior high school or older with a Royal Academy of Dance Advanced 1 and 2 or equivalent qualification as a minimum.

The group will conduct its own rehearsals before a 90 minute run-through with the matador the day prior to production as well as participation in the full dress rehearsal.

Auditions will be held at Melissa Dance Elements Studio (3 Nicholson St, Warrnambool) on July 18 at 11am.

Performed to Rodion Shchedrin’s gripping Carmen Suite score, this iconic tale of Spanish heat and gypsy passion unravels when naïve soldier Don Josè has his heart ignited by the fiery Carmen.

Josè’s attempts to tame the freedom-loving beauty are futile, and when she leaves him for the famous matador Escamillo, all three are engulfed in the flames of jealousy and revenge.

Carmen Sweet will be performed at the Lighthouse Theatre on Wednesday October 28 at 8pm and the Portland Arts Centre on Friday 30 October at 7.30pm.
