From violinists to volunteers and athletes to academic achievers, some of the region’s top young people succeeding in myriad areas have been officially recognised.

The 2016 Warrnambool and Moyne Youth Achiever Awards were held on Wednesday night at the Lighthouse Theatre, with 19 people aged between 12 and 21 receiving awards.

Categories included community and leadership, sports, academics and arts and culture.

The overall Youth Achiever of the Year winners and runners-up were also announced.

More than 150 nominations were received.

Warrnambool Youth Mayor Gabby Good said that the region’s young people are truly inspiring.

“The variety of achievements has been incredible this year, and we’ve seen many nominees who’ve reached national level in their chosen field, which is amazing,” she said.

“The amount of time and commitment required to achieve these things is huge, so our young people deserve the chance to be acknowledged and commended by the wider community.”

The awards are sponsored by Warrnambool City Council, Moyne Shire Council, Rotary Club of Warrnambool, Darrian Office and Art Supplies, South West Sport, Gwen and Edna Jones Foundation and Youth Affairs Council of Victoria.
